CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
âApparently, itâs our last chance.â
âApparently? What other choice is there?â
âWe could hide out. Move to another spot on the planet.â
âThatâs no choice. Thatâs only a delay.â
âStill, itâs an option.â
âNo, itâs not!â Liam Bell stood and accidentally flipped his tray of food onto the two people who had been doing nothing more than having a conversation.
âExcuse me?â the woman who was now covered in kelp protein and Varunaâs version of ketchup expressed.
âYou need to apologize to her,â her partner added. He had escaped most of the sauce landing on him, though there was a speck of it on his cheek that he did not seem to have noticed. He didnât sound all that sure, though. Liam realized he must look like a crazy person.
âSorry. I shouldnât have been eavesdropping.â
He turned and walked from the cafeteria. He wasnât actually sorry about eavesdropping. There were less than two thousand people on all of Varuna. If there was ever a world to gossip, it was this one. Practically everyone on the planet was only a few degrees away from everyone else. And there was a new rumor going around.
A week ago, Liam would have been able to ask the group of conspirators what everyone in the colony was talking about, but since cutting ties with them, he was more isolated than he had been since coming to Varuna. Not that he necessarily minded. Liam was coming to realize his father had been right. He had picked some bad groups of friends. He wanted to be more careful next time.
If there was a next time.
Given what Liam had finally put together from snatches of conversation stolen from the cafeteria or people chatting in the hallways as they headed to work, this was not the time to be careful. Dane was putting together a mission to return to Alpha Centauri.
Liam wanted to be part of it.
He knew his father didnât approve of him using his position as the son of a senator to get what he wanted, and Liam mostly tried to live by that. Yet in this situation, he was more than willing to use his family to get what he wanted.
He walked into his dadâs office unannounced.
âI want to help with the mission to Alpha Centauri,â he proclaimed without preamble.
His father had always been good at hiding his emotions, but not from his own son. Liam recognized the twitch of a frown that was supposed to hide a smile and the way his eyebrows scooted up in surprise.
Ron sighed. âHow did you find out about this?â
âSo itâs true, then?â Liam continued.
Ron smirked at that. âI guess I should have played that closer to the chest, but youâve always been able to read me. Itâs classified, though, so I need to know how you know.â
Liam snorted. âWeâre not on Alpha Centauri anymore, Dad. Everyone on this planet knows everyone else. I put it together. One of the captured ships is being outfitted for a longer voyage. I know that because all the food handlers have been complaining about having to load it up.
